What it’s like to graduate from altMBA
Four weeks ago I joined one hundred students from around the world to experience a new kind of learning called altMBA. Created by thought leader Seth Godin, it was founded based on the following posture:
“The system we grew up with is a mess. It’s falling apart at the seams and a lot of people I care about (maybe you) are in pain because the things we thought would work, don’t. Every day I meet people who have so much to give but have been bullied enough or frightened enough to hold it back. They have become victims, pawns in a senseless system that uses them up and undervalues them.
It’s about a choice and it’s about your life. This choice doesn’t require you to quit your job, though it challenges you to rethink how you do your job. It’s time to stop complying with the system and draw your own map.
Stop settling for merely getting by and start creating art that matters. Stop asking what’s in it for you and start giving gifts that change people. Then, and only then, will you have achieved your potential.
For hundreds of years, the population has been seduced, scammed and brainwashed into fitting in, following instructions and exchanging a day’s work for a day’s pay. That era has come to an end, and just in time.
You have brilliance in you, your contribution is valuable, and the art you create is previous. Only you can do it, and you must. I’m hoping you’ll stand up and choose to make a difference.”
Seth Godin — altMBA
The course delivered on its promise of ‘seeing more clearly’, ‘making better decisions’ and ‘telling better stories’.
Much of this has prompted internal reflection through a series of 12 projects supported by diverse range of people around the world. Business owners, directors, artists, students, challengers, sensers and do’ers.
It is the ultimate blend of professional and personal growth that can make you re-examine why you do what you do in work and life. Those beliefs you hold to be true may have working in your favour a few years back, but what about now?
The courses delivers on its core promises then over delivers through the generous network of humans who you’ll meet through Slack and Zoom channels creating a virtuous feedback circle with every interaction.
What did I learn?
How to look through at opportunities through the lens of ‘assets, boundaries and narratives’. I discovered that ‘freedom to move’ was an asset I was undervaluing.
What the resistence is and how to overcome it. I realised that some projects I had planned were really sideshows that avoided my making the big decision.
That we all have so much more to offer when there is a community of warm and generous people around us cheering us along and providing powerful feedback to help us see our blindspots.
Not everyone will invest the $3,000 USD for the altMBA, not everyone will spend the 120 hours it takes to get through it. That’s the point it’s not for everyone. If you want a taster, I’m running a taster workshop for $NZ 160 on June 22nd in Napier.
If you prefer to jump in and apply for the real thing, applications are being accepted now for the next 4 week session.
PS: Mention my name and they will fast track your application.
PPS: Listen from 15 mins 37 secs on what’s around us and 28 mins 36 secs what to do next asked by Tim Ferriss.
